Color Wedding Invitations

There used to be a time when the one proper choice for wedding invitations were printed in formal ecru cards, engraved with traditional dark or black ink and carefully folded in just one manner --- left, vertical. These days, more and more couples are becoming whimsical and adventurous with their choices for the perfect wedding invitation. Colors like aqua, periwinkle, sage, teal or blush are popular choices that couples now choose over a dull and predictable ecru and black theme. And with good reasons...

Invitations are the first indication a couple extends to their guest, giving them a preview of what the wedding will be like. It is the guests' first clue to the wedding, which will then set the tone for what they should expect. It is not just merely words, names and dates printed to serve as an announcement. More than anything, the wedding invitation also allows the guests to take a look into the couples' personal style.

Ideally, each wedding invitation comes in two envelopes: the outer envelope and the inner envelope. The outer envelope serves as a mailing envelope where your address and your guest's details are printed. The inner envelope serves to protect the invitation. This is the envelope which you can play around with colors. Colors add interest to your wedding invitations. Usually, your wedding's color motif is the color normally used for your wedding invitation, to coordinate with your wedding's theme.

Here are a couple of things to remember when choosing your wedding colors for the invitations:

  • Disregard any color that does not sound appealing to you and rule that out of your color scheme.
  • When deciding on a wedding color for your invitations, first think of when and what time your wedding would take place.
  • If you've decided to get married in springtime, you may opt for light and mellow colors like "pastel", "periwinkle" or "peach". Go for bold and vibrant colors like "tangerine", "lime" or "gold" when planning a summer wedding. Colors like "sage", "seafoam" and "teal" are ideal for weddings celebrated in fall. While beautiful winter weddings in "navy", "berry" or "red" make lasting impression.
  • It would help if you gather information about the meanings of each basic color, as they can also symbolize something to your wedding.

RED - symbolizes beauty and passion. It is also the color of luck.
BLUE - suggest happiness and health
YELLOW - is the color for partnership and friendship
GREEN - represents fertility and peace
PINK - symbolizes love
ORANGE - suggests stimulation. It is also the color of knowledge.
PURPLE - represents growth and spirituality, the color of royalty.
WHITE - symbolizes fairness, peace and purity.

Color Pattern

Once you shall have selected your colors, you can then choose the patterns and combinations to use for the invitation:

  • Monochromatic: this pattern has only one color but carries various shades of it. So, if your wedding invitation's envelope lining are in a dark bluish tone, you could choose to have the paper or card in a lighter shade of blue.
  • Complimentary: this pattern uses related colors that compliment each other on the color wheel.
  • Accents: this pattern uses one particular color (example: navy) accented with neutrals (white).

Ink Colors

Although black ink is traditionally the color of choice, brides these days are deciding on complimentary colors to go with the wedding's theme and motif. For example: a hunter green ink for green shaded cards or a deep purple ink for lavender cards, give it an interesting touch. Top color choices for ink nowadays include: grey, silver and sage.

If you're uncomfortable with using colored ink for your invitation, you can play around with other accesories to make your invitation nicer. Accents such as a colorful tissue or fabric inserted inside the line or envelope adds a tasteful touch.

Be it a formal or a funky theme; a relaxed or a romantic wedding, the bride and groom are ultimately the ones who will decide how their wedding invitations must look like. Today's invitations not only come in a variety of colors and shades but are also available in different types of textures and papers to suit any kind of theme. You can also combine two colors to make a striking invatation. For example, pink and black wedding invitations, pink and aqua inveatations, black and white, etc.

Also take note that apart from the invitations, couples also need to send out Thank You Cards or Gift Registry cards, so it might be a practical idea to coordinate all of these into your chosen color scheme.
