Wedding Invitation Etiquette

All of the important decisions concerning your wedding, such as date, dress, and the location of the reception and ceremony, should be finalized by the last month or two before the wedding. This will allow you time to focus on creating and sending out invitations.

Reflect the Tone and Theme

The wedding invitation should reflect the type of affair the wedding is going to be. Informal affairs should have simple invitations, perhaps handwritten. Formal weddings should also be reflected in the invitation style. If color co-ordinations have been chosen for table arrangements or dresses, this should be noted. In addition, weddings with a certain theme are best accompanied by themed wedding invitations

Send them On Time

Wedding invitations be sent out neither too early nor too late. Guests need enough time to arrange travel plans. Invitations should be sent anywhere form eight weeks prior to the ceremony but no later than one month. Six weeks is the ideal time frame. Learn how to word the invitations here.

Include the Details

Wedding invitations should always include the names of the people who are hosting or paying for the event. Guests should be requested to come, and the date of the event, time, and location of the ceremony are all necessary. Formal dress should be made mention of, and a separate card should have reception details.

Appearing last on the invitation should be the RSVP- a request for a response. This request lets people know that a confirmation of their presence is expected.

Handwrite the Envelopes

An envelope with handwritten addressing is considered the proper etiquette when sending out the wedding invitations. If you have hundreds of guests at your wedding, make sure and enlist the aid of members of your wedding party (especially your maid of honor) in addressing the envelopes.

Follow Up

If the deadline for RSVPs passes and some people still have not responded, it is up to the bride's mother to phone the absentees to find out their intentions. The RSVPs will help you get an idea of how much food and room you will need for your wedding.
